The analysis has three parts and is worth 40 points. Your analysis is to refer to and include
information from the textbook and the ethnography for support. The write-up is to include in-text
citations using APA Style for their formatting. You are encouraged to put ideas into your own
words rather than using direct quotations. Be sure to address all parts of the prompts.
Part 1 (18 points)
Select either Donny or Jenny from Purcell-Gatesâ ethnography and analyze their literacy
development using Bronfenbrennerâs bioecological model of development. What factors
inhibited and what factors supported Donnyâs/Jennyâs literacy development? In your analysis
address all levels of the model and include developmental concepts presented in the course. It
may be helpful to review page 616/Box 14.2 Theories & Theorists in the textbook. Be sure to
provide examples from the ethnography to support your claims. Your analysis should include,
but not be limited to, ideas related to:
⢠Executive functions
⢠Practice
⢠Academic achievement
⢠Intelligence and ability
⢠Social competence
⢠Prosocial/antisocial behavior
⢠Peer relations
⢠SES
⢠Shared/Nonshared environments
⢠Parental involvement
⢠Parenting styles
⢠Teacher-student relationships
⢠Emergent literacy
⢠Conventional literacy
⢠Cultural capital

2
⢠Fixed/Growth mindset
⢠Stereotypes & prejudice
⢠Pygmalion effect
Part 2 (10 points)
Given who you selected in Part 1, Donny or Jenny, analyze Dr. Purcell-Gatesâ approach to
teaching literacy. What theory/theories of literacy did she employ? What did she do? Was this an
effective approach? Explain. According to what is presented in the textbook and the
ethnography, what components made this approach effective/ineffective? Be sure to anchor your
analysis using ideas/concepts presented in the course.
Part 3 (10 points)
Using what you learned from the textbook and from the ethnography, discuss how you would
approach the situation of having an illiterate student in your classroom. What would you do to
ensure that this individual was receiving the appropriate amount of support from the school,
home life, and from you? What road blocks do you see related to your plan? Again, anchor your
ideas with ideas/concepts presented in the course.
Formatting & Submission (2 points)
Your analysis should be about 6 (no more than 7) pages. The case study is be typed in Times
New Roman font, 12 point, double spaced, one inch margins on each side. APA style should be
used for all in-text citations. You do not need to include a formal reference page or formal
reference for the textbook or ethnography. Information on how to cite using APA style can be
found in the course modules.
