In this essay, I would like to compare and contrast two well-known paintings: the Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh and Impression Sunrise by Claude Monet. First of all, I would like to discuss the differences and the similarities between impressionist versus Post-Impressionist as the Post-Impressionists rejected impressionism in the realistic and spontaneous rendering of light and color but convey more on the emotion and thick brush stroke. According to that, Monet can be considered the founder of the impressionism movement, whereas Van Gogh can be regarded as a post-impressionist artist. His work is also recognized as the extended version of the impressionist. Both of these paintings have great use of light, and it is the effect on the color of their subject matters, objects, and the spaces within. So I would like to examine the idea of the techniques and how did post-impressionism develop from impressionism.
