The sources of Russian foreign policy

What are the sources of Russian foreign policy? To what extent is Russian foreign behavior largely reactive to other countries’ economic and military capabilities and Russia’s geography? To what extent do internal factors, such as domestic politics, identities, and regime stability within Russia, determine Russian behavior abroad? Using three mini-cases, from Soviet and post-Soviet periods, assess which explanation(s) appear(s) to most fully explain what Russian leaders do abroad. What are the implications of your analysis for thinking about Russian foreign policy after Russia’s war with Ukraine ends?
