The culmination of all the methods

1 Background and purpose
This project is meant as the culmination of all the methods covered in the course. It is intended to bring together the modelling and simulation aspects of a real system. This includes formulation of the equations from first principles, estimating the relevant parameters. casting it all in the state space formulation and performing a computer simulation of the system. For this purpose a suitable structure is provided (In this case a 400 kW 4-pole synchronous-machine). The machine is intended to be mechanically driven with a DC motor and 4 quadrant drive combination to provide variable speed. It will be operated as a stand-alone generator in this project. (No grid synchronisation required!) The following has to be undertaken and reported:

  1. investigate and understand the operation of the synchronous-machine. 2. get a good grasp of the underlying principles of operation, 3. fonnulate the controlling electrical and mechanical equations for this device. 4. estimate (or measure) the required parameters (of the physical system) for the modelling equations, 5. re-formulate into the canonical state-space format. 6. code the system of equations in MatLab/Octave or similar software package, 7. simulate the generator run-up with and without field excitation and 8. critically analyze the results and 9. comment on the accuracy and usability of the methods applied.
