drop box. View the videos in the module for students with last names R-Z first!

Provide two examples from your textbook or working urls to clearly explain
the following questions.
Check urls to be sure they work by clicking on them after you have posted.
Urls are best if they lead to a page with just one image, but others
are allowed if you feel the information is excellent.
Explain in your own words how these examples address the questions below.
Clearly describe specific visual aspects from each of your examples.
You should have one example for each question - both created from 1600-1945
Discussing specific visual aspects for each of your chosen examples, answer the following. Must include the title, date and artist for each example.
How have artists made their work effective for political and social change? (example made from 1600-1945) One example with explanation.
What artwork created between 1600-1945 can you find that affirms the values of minority groups? Explain how the affirmation is shown. One example with explanation.
2.A. What are the main differences between the 19th Century French Impressionists:
(Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cassatt, Morisot or Manet) and the
Post Impressionists? (Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin or Seurat).
The Impressionist section of the text begins on p. 475 in the 10th & 11th ed;
p. 487 in the 12th ed.
The Post-Impressionist section of the text begins on p. 478 in 10th & 11 ed;

Give at least one example from each art movement.
You should describe significant characteristics about each art movement in order to compare them.
Set up your answer using this format:

  1. Impressionist example 1 (title, artist, date)
  2. Characteristics of Impressionist paintings
    (at least 2 characteristics)
  3. Post Impressionist example 1 (title, artist, date)
  4. Two characteristics of Post Impressionist paintings
  5. Post-Impressionist differences from Impressionists
    at least 2 characteristics/differences
    B. Discussion Board Portion of this question - indicate in your drop box file
that you have posted to the discussion board.

Choose either an Impressionist or Post-Impressionist painting from the late 1800's to early 1900's in France. Note: The Impressionists include Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cassatt, Morisot.
The Post Impressionists include Van Gogh, Cezanne, Seurat, Gauguin.
Your source may be from your textbook or internet source (see below).
Label your choice as either Impressionist or Post-Impressionist.
Take a newly composed photo (do not look for photos you already have or copy photos). The new photo will be your
own photo version of your chosen Impressionist or Post-Impressionist painting AFTER you have looked at a selection
of paintings and THEN composed one in a similar way.
For example, what would a modern day photo version of a Monet painting or Van Gogh painting look like if you arranged/composed it in a similar way?
You may embellish your photo with digital software, but that is not a requirement.
Upload your own newly created French Impressionist or Post-Impressionist inspired photo to the discussion board
with an explanation stating your source painting and additional comments about your experience with the new photographic version;
how yours is similar to the source, etc. Remember to document the inspiration painting's artist, title and date and include
a working url (check it out after you post it) if that is where you found your source. Label your original painting as either Impressionist or Post-Impressionist. Respond to two other student's photos.
Be creative and have fun with this assignment.

3.Choose a Modernist style abstract artwork from your textbook or the internet.
Modernism does not mean art from the present day. It is explained in your textbook. In the 10th & 11 ed. it is pages 483-490; in the 12th ed. it is p. 498-503. The years
for Abstract Modernism are approximately 1900-1930's. This time period contains several different art movements, so be sure to choose an artwork that is in the Abstract Modernist style. Surrealism is a style that has some
abstraction, but it is different than Modernism. Avoid Surrealist art, including art by Salvidor Dali. Read your textbook carefully.
Post-Modernism begins in the 1970's….we will study it later in the
semester, so do not confuse Post-Modernism with Modernism.
Abstract Modernists include the following artists:
Matisse
Derain
Heckel
Kandinsky
Delaunay
Leger
Kirchner
Dove
Hartley
Davis
Scheile
Modersohn-Becker
Picasso
Braque
Mondrian
Before you choose a piece for this question, consider carefully:
What is the definition of ABSTRACT?
Include a working url or textbook figure number or a link to an image, carefully
documenting the title, artist and date.
How do you personally react to the piece you chose?
What do you think Modernist abstract artists were concerned with expressing?
Critique your chosen work from one of the points of view discussed in your textbook on page 126 in the 10th ed., p. 125 in the 11th ed.; see the link in the module in all caps "POINTS OF VIEW" if you have the 12th ed. Choose either formalism, iconography, biography, psychoanalysis, social context or feminism. There is also a link to this textbook page in the Part 6 module.
Using what you think is an appropriate point of view, explain what you think is being expressed using just one of the points of view.
