As part of our study of Group Dynamics, we explore meetingsâwhat are they, why do we have them, what
defines an effective meeting, etc.? Our society is completely centered around meetings (Doyle & Straus, 1976).
From the boardroom to the break room; from the football huddle to the âhuddle room;â from a meeting of the
minds to a âcome to Jesus meeting,â we love to meet.
Assignment Details
Attend, observe, and assess a meeting. Find a recorded meeting online or attend a meeting in person, where
group dynamics can be observed. As you watch the meeting, observe behaviors of the members. Then,
complete the Meeting Assessment Form [DOWNLOAD]. After you have completed the assessment form,
compose a written response to address the following prompts: (You do not have to submit the assessment
form.)
Include the topic of the meeting, the date, and the group purpose or title.
What was the purpose of the meeting?
Want kind of information did you receive in advance of the meeting?
What leader behaviors did you observe that were positive?
What leader behaviors did you observe that were negative?
Briefly describe your observations of the five stages of group dynamics (forming, storming, norming,
performing, adjourning).
Overall, would you rate this meeting as effective or ineffective, and why?
