Internet Problem 3 Geography, Weather, and Climate

Part 1 of this Internet Problem is designed to investigate the impact of geography on weather and climate by comparing the weather and climate of Trinidad, Colorado and San Francisco, California.

Part 2 involves looking at Geodetic Earth Orbiting Satellite (GEOS) weather satellite data for the region in which you live.

Part 1:
A) Go to the NOAA Earth System Research Lab Climate webpage:

https://psl.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/data/usclimate/state….

Look at the climate page for Colorado and select Trinidad, Colorado.

a) What is the latitude of Trinidad?
b) What is the elevation of Trinidad (“the mile-high city”)?

Review the annual climate data for Trinidad and answer the questions below:
c) What is the range in annual temperatures (include temperature highs and lows)? d) What type of precipitation dominates (rain or snow)?

B) Now look at the climate data for California and choose San Francisco, California http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/data/usclimate/sta…

a) What is the latitude of San Francisco?
b) What is the elevation of San Francisco?
Review the annual climate data for San Francisco and answer the questions below:

c) What is the range in annual temperatures (include the highest temperature and lowest temperature)?

d) What type of precipitation dominates (rain or snow)?
