In this part of our text, we are concerned with emotions and how we communicate them. Everybody's favorite chapter! Interpersonal communication makes us talk about our feelings? What? :)
Understanding how emotions affect people in various ways, how to communicate our feelings responsibly and authentically are all integral to self-understanding and successful communication. But now, we switch gears and look to what happens between selves, i.e. the message. Chapter 5 focuses on emotions, influences on expression, guidelines for expressing and managing emotions.
Pick 2 options out of the below and discuss.
Based on the section on page 142 "Introverts: Thoughtful, not shy," a). do you regard yourself as an introvert or an extrovert? b). do you agree introverts are misunderstood in our culture? If so, provide examples from your network of close friends and family.
In what circumstances do you or don't you show your feelings? What factors influence your decision to show or not show your feelings? They type of feeling? The person or persons involved? The situation or the subject that the feeling involves?
Recall 3 recent times when you felt a strong emotion. For each one, recall the activating event and then the interpretation that led to your emotional reaction.
