M5D1 Search Strategies (15 points)
No response posts required for this module.
Conduct a series of online searches using kid-friendly search engines, then respond to the prompts. Citations are not required for this discussion. 500 words maximum.
Explore three kid-friendly search engines (in M5S2) by conducting a series of searches using identical search strings. For each tool, start with a broad keyword and record the number of hits (search results).Â
Begin narrowing your search results by adding more specific keywords, Boolean operators (e.g., plus sign, minus sign, quotation marks), and qualifiers such as types of sites (e.g, org, gov, edu) or types of files (e.g., pdf, image, video, news).
Example (please choose your own student-friendly topic):
tiger
sumatran tiger
sumatran tiger +kids
"sumatran tiger" +kids +site:edu
sumatran tiger +kids +endangered +filetype:pdf
Part I: Briefly summarize your results using bullet points or a table. Use formatting tools in Microsoft Word prior to posting, or use D2L formatting tools.
Part II: Choose ONE topic below based on your student population.
Students: If you plan to teach students who will be conducting online research, offer advice and resources for teaching students efficient search strategies and critical examination of online sources.Â
Teachers: If you plan to teach students who will not be conducting online research (e.g., K-2, moderate-severe disabilities), offer advice and resources for helping teachers locate and critically evaluate online sources to use with their students.
