Comparing a company’s financial strength among different industries

Most everyone knows that Apple is sitting on a “pile of cash” valued as high as $285 billion. How much of that is truly Free Cash Flow? Why are financial ratios dramatically different among different industries? How would you compare a company’s financial strength among different industries?
